GIVE INFORMATION AWAY
Okay, I give up. I have gone through my old tapes (yes, you read it right – I still have drawer full) and wanted to find the tapes by a woman who owned a chain of beauty shops and has become a national speaker. If anyone knows whom I am talking about, please send me her name.
At any rate, I heard her speak and there was a statement she made that has stuck with me. A man asked, “Why would you go on tour and give away your secrets when the people you are speaking to could start their own stores and become your competition?” Without missing a beat she said, “Honey, I am not worried about that – it is hard enough to get my own staff to do these things.”
I answered a question in a social networking discussion group about my marketing plans for this year. I listed five points:
1. Social networking-- LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter
2. A new website
http://www.kathycondon.info
3. Submitting articles
4. One-on-One Coffee Dates
5. Enter into discussion groups.
The next morning I got a call asking if I would like to be interviewed for a radio program.
A human resource communication list had a request: “Giving a presentation to people who are unemployed—any helpful tips?”
Sent off a note: Yes, make sure they have contact cards (formerly called business cards) and suggest that they write handwritten notes.
A call came that night and the author of the question asked if she could hand out my “50 Tips for Networking” on my homepage http://www.kathycondon.info
Still smiling – gave information away and things came back to me two-fold.
BUSINESS COMMUNICATION TIP:
I have a number of subjects that I follow: intergenerational communication in the workplace, networking, business communication, men and women communications in the workplace and, of course, blog ideas or book ideas. Way too many papers to keep track of in my office. Problem solved : Got stacking bins and have labeled them. Each time find information, it is put into the appropriate bin

TIME TO GET BACK INTO CAREER PRODUCTIVITY MODE
The suitcases are unpacked. Most of the Belgium chocolate delivered to grateful friends. Groceries have been brought in and the house is cleaned. Time to get the focus on plans for 2009.
Before I left on my three-week journey, I took twelve folders and wrote each month on them. Things that I absolutely want to do, have found their way into one of the folders. When I opened up January, I smiled for there were reminders of things to do that I might have forgotten. Looks like this is going to work great for me.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I have opened a whole new world by getting active in "social networking". As one Tweeter said "information overload." So obviously one of the keys to productivity this year is managing my time. Social networking is addictive -- and you are never done.
Starting to work on my networking book and have already decided not to write much about "social networking". Technology is changing rapidly. The book would be outdated before it is even printed.
The handwritten thank you note waiting for me in my mail brought a smile to my face--nothing like the personal note.
BUSINESS COMMUNICATION TIP:
If you want new business tips that works, read a book written by Og Mandino. Delightful way to learn "little things" that make a difference.

IS IT "SOCIAL NETWORKING" OR "SOCIAL MEDIA"?
During the last month I have been spending a great deal of time on the computer. I know I have to stay on top of technology and decided it was time to figure out Twitter, Facebook etc.
Since I speak and train on networking in person, I got to thinking "Is "social networking" the right word for interactions on these sites? I have asked the question on http://www.Twitter.com no response yet.
A colleague that I respect happened to call on another issue. She brought an interesting perspective to my question. She's nearing the half-way point of her Masters Degree. She said her classmates had just had a discussion on that very subject. They decided, more than likely, it is"social networking" -- taken to the virtual world.
The issue seems to be how to apply professional standards to this virtual arena and the connecting that is happening throughout the world. People are finally starting to understand that what they write will float in cyberspace for years. There are many people having regrets about what they wrote. Perhaps, we need the Emily Post of cyberspace communication?
BUSINESS COMMUNICATION TIP:
If you are packing something to send, make sure you pack it very tight. It seems that breakage occurs when the item inside can move. Loose, wadded newspaper is not enough to cushion the object.
